Research Fellow (Disease)
We are looking for a talented researcher with an interest in zoonotic disease epidemiology and molecular biology skills to make a leading contribution to an ongoing interdisciplinary project that aims to reduce the impact of rodent-borne diseases on rural communities in Africa.
Rodents have significant impacts on human health and well-being, including through the transmission of disease. The project focuses on Madagascar, working with local research organisations and stakeholders, and conducting studies of linked rodent-human populations to improve our understanding of disease epidemiology in rodents (plague, leptospirosis, rickettsioses and others) and the burden of disease for human communities. These studies include longitudinal community-based and clinic-based studies of the local population, as well as cross-sectional studies of rodent populations. This post will support ongoing lab work (serological and molecular assays, and sequencing) and analyse the resulting data. This will include using sequence data to understand pathogen genetic variation and the epidemiological role of different host species. The post holder will also analyse infection data with a focus on identifying environmental and, for human datasets, socioeconomic drivers of risk. This position will work closely with partner institutes, contribute to training of team members in Madagascar and lead in the writing and submission of research publications.
The successful candidate will hold a PhD in relevant subject area (e.g. epidemiology, zoology, molecular biology or ecology, immunology or related field). They should have a depth of relevant research experience with statistical analysis skills, including the analysis of sequencing data, and a track record of publication of quality research articles.
This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a dynamic interdisciplinary collaboration, and the position will work closely with the wider team, including other PDRAs focussing on ecological studies and social-science and stakeholder engagement.
Salary will be at the appropriate point on Grade 6, £38,784.00 - £46,049.00 per annum with placement according to qualifications and experience.
Informal enquiries should be made to Dr Sandra Telfer, Principal Investigator, e-mail: s.telfer@abdn.ac.uk
